Yesterday, an event organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong took place in MGM Macau: first with a guided visit in the MGM Museum, then with a good cocktail/dinner in Aux Beaux Arts. Only 10-15 Italians: an intimate gathering that highlighted the increasing attention and importance of the Italian community in Macau.

The Italian community’s gathering in Macau
The event represented much more than a mere institutional ceremony. For the Italian community living in Macau, it was in fact an opportunity to come together and share a meaningful cultural and social experience in one of the most iconic venues of the city: MGM Macau.
The Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong continues to play a vital role for Italian citizens, students, workers, entrepreneurs and families living in the region. It is true that the main operations and their presence is in Hong Kong, but Macau is being recognized as a strategic area of development. Not only casinos, but also a history of European influences and UNESCO heritage sites.
The gathering offered us the opportunity to enjoy an informal yet memorable setting, with moments of conviviality and discovery linked to the two territories. It was a great opportunity to meet academics working in Macau as well as professionals linked to the F&B Industry, import/export, diplomats, aviation, etc.
The initiative also confirms the strong sense of community that characterises Italians living in the region. Although numerically small compared to other international communities, the Italian community continues to stand out for its participation in initiatives organised by the Consulate, ranging from events dedicated to Republic Day to cultural, economic and social gatherings that help to strengthen relations between Italy, Hong Kong and Macau. The Italian community in Macau may be small but it’s made up by great people and professionals who represent Italy in high positions. Everyone had a story to tell: who was a Professor, who was a pilot, businessman, etc.

The ceremony took place yesterday, 11 July, at 5.00 pm at the MGM Macau. The venue is regarded as one of the city’s most iconic integrated resorts and regularly hosts institutional, cultural and international events. There’s an article about it, published few days ago, dedicated to the recent “MGM Events and Celebrations Open House“.
Situated on the seafront of the Macau Peninsula, MGM Macau is renowned for its event facilities, high-end accommodation and its role in the city’s tourism and conference sector.
We all enjoyed a guided visit to the MGM Museum, discovering the artistic and cultural treasures preserved within the resort. Afterwards, we continued the evening with dinner at Aux Beaux Arts, one of MGM Macau’s most elegant restaurants.
It’s great to see an initiative of this kind organised in Macao. In recent years, the Consulate has already promoted several events in the city, and one of the most recent ones I recall took place at an MGM property: “Vino Condiviso 2026 Macau, Viva Italia”. On that occasion, the venue was Vista, at MGM Cotai, a venue I’d had the opportunity to visit thanks to an activity organised by the University of Macau.
My experience with the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong
I arrived in Macao in December 2023 as an Erasmus+ student. During those first few months, I was able to appreciate first-hand the efficiency of the Italian Consulate-General in Hong Kong: my passport had been damaged a few months after my arrival and I had to replace it quickly. The assistance I received was excellent, prompt and professional.
Once my Erasmus experience was over, I returned to Italy for about three months to complete my university studies and graduate. I then returned to Macau on a work visa, registered with AIRE and began a new phase of my international experience: moving permanently to this place.
In the years that followed, I had the opportunity to work, study and build my academic and professional life in Macao. I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in International Integrated Resort Management at the University of Macau and working as a research assistant. During this time, I have had several opportunities to interact with the Consulate, both on administrative matters and at institutional events and initiatives dedicated to the Italian community. Although I have never collaborated with them directly, I have always supported their activities indirectly and taken part in them.
For this reason, I consider this ceremony to be particularly significant. It was a small but more significant event where there was actually opportunity to talk about Macau and not only Hong Kong.
The links between Italy, Hong Kong and Macao
Hong Kong and Macao represent two profoundly different yet complementary realities for the Italian presence in Asia. Hong Kong continues to be one of the region’s leading financial and commercial hubs, whilst Macau has established itself as one of the world’s most important destinations for tourism, hospitality, events and the integrated resort industry.
Although Macao does not have a dedicated Italian representation, the territory is home to a community comprising students, professionals, researchers, tourism sector workers and entrepreneurs who maintain regular contact with Italian institutions.
This is also the reason for which I created this website: Italy in Macau. The first Italian community in Macau only dedicated to people living or visiting Macau.
In recent years, Macau has also strengthened its international standing through investment in higher education, business events, cultural tourism and economic diversification. Against this backdrop, there is no shortage of opportunities for Italian citizens and companies interested in developing academic, professional and commercial partnerships.
The University of Macau is one of the most striking examples of this growing internationalisation. Throughout my academic and professional career, I have had the opportunity to contribute to international initiatives, including guest lectures on the topics of international marketing and social media marketing, drawing on case studies and practical experience gained across Europe and Asia. I have written opinion pieces for Eurasia Review and TravelDailyNews Asia-Pacific, delivered guest lectures to classes at the University of Macau, and taken part in events such as the Asian IR Expo and G2E Asia, amongst others.
