On 25 April 2026, I attended the 2026 MGM Events and Celebrations Open House thanks to the University of Macau, Faculty of Business Administration, where I’m studying and serving as research assistant. The experience was organized for a small group of master’s and PhD students and provided an interesting opportunity to explore the world of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) venues in Macau.

Macau is widely recognized as a premium MICE destination and one of the most popular business event hubs in Asia. DOC DMC Macau’s article, Why Macau Stands Out for 500+ Delegate Meetings in Asia, provides a clear explanation of Macau’s competitive advantages. One of the city’s greatest strengths, for example, is its compact size. With only 33.3 km² of land area, visitors can easily move between hotels, convention facilities, entertainment venues and business districts without long travel times. The concentration of integrated resorts along the Cotai Strip further enhances Macau’s attractiveness for international meetings and events.
Exploring MGM Cotai’s Event Facilities
The Open House was held at MGM Cotai in Taipa. We were welcomed by a member of the MGM events team, who guided me and four other students through several of the property’s major event venues. Although a similar experience was also available at MGM Macau, we selected MGM Cotai because of its convenient location.
The visit immediately highlighted the high standards maintained by MGM. What impressed me most was the scale and flexibility of the facilities. MGM Cotai offers approximately 39,000 square feet of event space, including a pillar-less ballroom of approximately 864 square metres, flexible Grand Salon spaces, conference rooms and boardrooms designed for a wide variety of corporate and social events.
The resort is also home to The Spectacle, which features the world’s largest free-span gridshell glazed roof recognized by Guinness World Records. Another notable venue is the MGM Theater, recognized as Asia’s first dynamic theater and capable of accommodating up to 2,000 guests in multiple configurations. These facilities demonstrate why MGM Cotai has become one of Macau’s leading MICE venues and an important contributor to the city’s reputation as a world-class destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.
During the tour, MGM representatives explained how venue flexibility plays a critical role in event management. Several meeting rooms can be divided into smaller spaces or combined into larger venues depending on client requirements. This flexibility allows multiple companies to host events simultaneously while maintaining privacy and operational efficiency. In cases where a single organization requires a larger setup, the spaces can be integrated to create a more expansive venue.
The facilities are not limited to business events. MGM also hosts weddings, celebrations and social functions.
Reflections on Macau’s MICE Industry
The visit helped me better understand that successful MICE operations require much more than attractive meeting rooms. Venue design, technology integration, operational flexibility, hospitality standards and customer experience are all essential factors. Seeing these facilities in person helped me connect many concepts discussed in class with real-world industry practices.
The experience also reinforced the importance of non-gaming business segments within Macau’s integrated resort industry. Through meetings, conferences, exhibitions, weddings and corporate events, integrated resorts create additional revenue streams while strengthening Macau’s position as an international business tourism destination.
My current work experience at DOC DMC Macau & Hong Kong (part of the MSc in International Integrated Resort Management at the University of Macau), one of Macau’s leading destination management companies, is also allowing me to learn more about the MICE industry. Working in this environment provides valuable exposure to the planning and execution of meetings, incentive trips, conventions and exhibitions. Through both academic study and professional experience, I have come to better appreciate why Macau remains one of Asia’s most competitive MICE destinations. The city’s infrastructure, hospitality expertise and collaborative ecosystem enable it to successfully host a wide range of international events.
