The University of Macau (UM) will participate in the upcoming QS Discover Master’s Fairs in Italy, with scheduled appearances in Bologna on 14 October 2026 and Milan on 16 October 2026. For many Italian students considering postgraduate education abroad, the events represent a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of Asia’s fastest-rising universities and discover academic opportunities in a region that remains unfamiliar to many young Europeans.

While destinations such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain traditionally dominate the study abroad conversation in Italy, Asia is increasingly emerging as a strategic alternative. Among the institutions attracting growing international attention is the University of Macau, a public comprehensive university that has built a strong reputation in research, internationalization, hospitality education, business studies, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and interdisciplinary research.

The presence of UM at the QS Discover Master’s events is more than a simple student recruitment initiative. It reflects Macau’s ambition to strengthen academic cooperation with Europe and create new pathways between East and West. For Italy, whose students are becoming increasingly interested in global careers, China-related business, tourism management, technology, and international affairs, Macau offers a unique environment positioned at the crossroads of Asia and Europe.

What Are the QS Discover Master’s Fairs?

QS Discover Master’s events are among the best-known postgraduate recruitment fairs in the world. They bring together universities, business schools, and higher education institutions from multiple countries, allowing prospective students to meet admissions officers, gather information about scholarships, compare programmes, and explore international study opportunities.

Unlike traditional online marketing campaigns, these fairs offer face-to-face interaction. Students can ask practical questions about admissions, academic life, career prospects, accommodation, visa procedures, and funding opportunities.

For universities, participation is equally important. It provides direct access to talented candidates while helping institutions build visibility in priority international markets.

Italy has become an increasingly interesting destination for international recruitment. Italian students are highly mobile, multilingual, and often open to international experiences. Many have already participated in Erasmus programs and are willing to consider destinations beyond Europe when evaluating postgraduate opportunities.

Why the University of Macau Matters

Founded in 1981, the University of Macau has transformed from a regional institution into one of Asia’s increasingly recognized universities. Today it attracts students and faculty from around the world and conducts research across a wide range of disciplines.

English serves as the primary language of instruction for many postgraduate programs, making UM particularly attractive for international students. The university has also invested heavily in research infrastructure, global partnerships, and international academic recruitment.

Its Faculty of Business Administration is particularly notable because it holds the prestigious Triple Crown accreditation system, including AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA recognition. Only a small percentage of business schools worldwide hold all three accreditations simultaneously.

Beyond business education, UM has developed strengths in fields such as computer science, education, hospitality and tourism management, linguistics, psychology, public administration, and emerging technologies.

The university also benefits from Macau’s unique position within the Greater Bay Area, one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions. Students studying in Macau gain exposure not only to the city itself but also to nearby innovation and business hubs such as Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Zhuhai.

Why Italian Students Should Pay Attention

For many Italians, studying in Asia remains an unconventional choice. However, the advantages are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

First, Asia continues to play a central role in global economic development. Students who build academic and professional experience in the region gain exposure to international markets, multicultural environments, and rapidly evolving industries.

Second, Macau offers a particularly accessible entry point into Asia. Its blend of Portuguese and Chinese heritage creates an environment that feels both international and culturally familiar to Europeans.

Italian students often discover that Macau combines several attractive elements:

  • International academic programs taught in English.
  • Strong connections with China and the Greater Bay Area.
  • Safe living conditions.
  • A multicultural student community.
  • Scholarship opportunities.
  • Growing research and internship possibilities.
  • Direct exposure to global tourism, hospitality, technology, finance, and innovation sectors.

This combination makes UM an attractive option not only for students interested in Asia but also for those pursuing careers in international business, tourism development, marketing, public policy, and cross-cultural management.

Macau: A Small City with Global Relevance

For many Europeans, Macau remains one of Asia’s least understood destinations.

Often associated exclusively with tourism and integrated resorts, the city has undergone a broader transformation in recent years. Macau is actively investing in education, innovation, research, technology, conferences, and cultural industries as part of its economic diversification strategy.

Higher education plays an important role in this transformation.

The University of Macau is at the center of that effort, helping attract international talent while strengthening the territory’s knowledge economy.

For international students, this means access to a city where government, academia, and industry increasingly collaborate on projects with regional and global relevance.

In practical terms, students can participate in academic research, entrepreneurship initiatives, cultural projects, internships, and international conferences while living in a highly connected Asian environment.

The Growing Relationship Between Italy and Macau

Andrea Pimpini after the G2E Asia and Asian IR Expo 2026 session

The University of Macau’s participation in the QS Discover Master’s Fairs is an important opportunity not only for student recruitment, but also for increasing international awareness of Macau as a place of education, research, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Over the past few years, one realization has become increasingly clear to me: Macau is often discussed through a very narrow lens. Internationally, the city is still frequently associated almost exclusively with gaming, despite the significant developments taking place in higher education, tourism, culture, technology, and economic diversification.

As a postgraduate student and researcher at the University of Macau, I have had the opportunity to witness these developments firsthand. I worked one year in Macau under a working visa, blue card, before studying for my master’s programme. Currently I’m doing my internship at DOC DMC Macau & Hong Kong, a Destination Management Company, and the sister companies Macau Event Company and smallWORLD Experience. This year I founded the first online community of Italians in Macau, this platform. Whether discussing tourism trends, university initiatives, regional development, major events, or cultural projects, my objective has been to contribute to a broader and more accurate understanding of the city and its evolution, while at the same trying to be the reference point for Italians in Macau.

Through articles, research, interviews, and independent publishing, I have sought to highlight stories that demonstrate Macau’s growing international relevance. In doing so, I hope not only to connect Italy with Macau, but more importantly to contribute, in a small way, to Macau’s visibility abroad and to the conversations surrounding its future.

From this perspective, the QS fairs in Bologna and Milan are particularly significant. They offer Italian students the opportunity to discover a university and a city that may not yet be on their radar, while giving the University of Macau another platform to showcase its academic strengths and global ambitions.

International Student Perspectives Matter

Universities can provide rankings, brochures, and programme information, but students increasingly want something more valuable: authentic experiences.

Before moving to Macau, I often found that information written from an Italian perspective was limited or difficult to find. Many practical questions about student life, research opportunities, professional development, and cultural adaptation remained unanswered.

That experience convinced me that firsthand accounts matter. Students who have gone through the process themselves can often provide insights that institutional communication cannot. They can explain what daily life is actually like, what opportunities exist beyond the classroom, and how studying abroad can influence both personal and professional growth.

For a destination such as Macau, which remains relatively unfamiliar to many Europeans, these perspectives become even more important.

Italy in Macau: Building a Digital Bridge

This philosophy eventually led to the creation of Italy in Macau.

The platform was established to create a dedicated space where Italians and international readers could find information about Macau’s educational opportunities, tourism sector, business environment, cultural life, and evolving relationship with Europe.

Over time, it has also become an opportunity to highlight stories that might otherwise go unnoticed, including student experiences, university initiatives, research activities, and developments shaping Macau’s future.

For prospective students researching topics such as studying at the University of Macau, living in Macau, or exploring opportunities in the Greater Bay Area, access to original and experience-based content can be particularly valuable.

Institutional information remains essential, but personal perspectives can help provide context. Together, they offer a more complete understanding of what it means to study, work, and build a future in Macau
